Welcome to PathAnnotate

A lightweight gross pathology specimen annotation tool that runs entirely in your browser. Draw rectangles, lines, and block labels over your specimen photos and generate a formatted block key for your dictation.

Your data stays on your device. No images or annotations are ever uploaded or transmitted anywhere. Everything is stored locally in your browser.

This guide will walk you through the basic workflow. You can reopen it any time from the ? button in the top bar.

Getting Started

1
Import a photo Click Import Photo or drag and drop an image onto the canvas.
2
Set the specimen title Click Set Title to enter a case number and specimen (e.g. 2 Left Kidney). This should be done before mapping sections since this sets the block format, e.g. "1A" or "A1". This also sets the file name when exported.
3
Draw rectangles to map your sections Use the Rect tool (R) to outline sections. Click the floating letter/number button by the rectangle to add the next sequential block label. Double-click to edit and add a range. You can also right-click to quickly do both of these actions.
4
Build the block key Add notes for each block in the Block Key panel on the left. Click the Copy button to paste this into your gross dictation.
5
Export Click Export Photo to export a .JPEG photo file with your annotations. Re-open it later in PathAnnotate to continue editing.
